Kilmac NS speeding scary: Cllrs

Cllrs Liam Blaney and Michael McBride have expressed serious concern about ongoing speeding in the vicinity of Kilmacrennan National School. The issue is in particular with some motorists coming from the Trentagh direction that are not slowing down as parents are dropping their children off to school in the morning and afternoon. Cllr McBride said it was an issue that had been raised before and parents were extremely worried that a serious incident is going to occur unless the Council introduces additional traffic calming measures.
The Independent Cllr said he hoped that options to address the concerns would be examined quickly to make the area around school safer at the peak times. Cllr Liam Blaney urged the Council to put in temporary ramps for a trial period to assess the impact on speed. He added that hopefully a more permanent solution could be found via the Community Fund but stressed that the Council had to put in temporary measures in the short term and again asked that temporary ramps be seriously considered. Cllr McBride said that the Local Authority had used temporary ramps in Newtowncunningham before a permanent option was put down. “Those ramps have to be lying somewhere in a Council yard and would be ideal to try out in Kilmacrennan.
The Cllrs raised the matter during Tuesday’s Municipal District meeting at the Letterkenny Public Services Centre. Cllr Blaney said the Council also had to look at traffic measures out as far as the crossroads junction in the village. He pointed to reports of cars not stopping at the junction thus causing a huge risk of collision onto a busy road. Cllr Pauric McGarvey said he too had received representations regarding the speeding traffic at Kilmacrennan N.S. He agreed with Cllr Blaney on a temporary ramps proposal saying it would not ‘break the bank’ to give it a trial. Area Roads Manager David McElwaine said while there was currently no funding his engineers would have a look at what measures could be introduced to improve safety in the vicinity of the school.
